April 28, 1998 This work in progress snapshot provides a new Xwindows server for pre-DR3 which supports virtual consoles under X. To use this server, replace the following files: /usr/X11R6/bin/Xpmac /etc/inittab /etc/profile with the versions in this directory. Be sure to save the old versions of these files. (If you've made your own modifications to /etc/inittab or /etc/profile, then you'll need to merge these changes in.) The changes to the inittab enable virtual consoles in run-level 5. The change to the /etc/profile removes the invocation of "screenrestore", which shouldn't be necessary now. Once you reboot you will be able to access virtual consoles while running X under either runlevel 3 (startx) or 5 (kdm or xdm). The X display is on Virtual Console #7. When you start X, the server will switch you to VC#7. Under X the other virtual consoles are accessed with the command-ctrl-F# keys where # is from 1 to 7. Remember that when you switch from X (VC#7) to a different virtual console you will need to press command-ctrl-F7 to return to X. Hitting a command-ctrl-F1 will return you to the console from which X was launched. Many thanks to Anthony Tong for providing virtual console support to Xpmac.
