March 20, 1998 There have been a few problems with the MkLinux Booter. Work continues on this piece of software. This directory contains several snapshots of the booter. For now, use the latest version that works for you. In all cases, if you FTP one of these booters, after you unbinhex it, rename it to "MkLinux Booter" and place it into your extensions directory. Contents of this directory -------------------------- MkLinux_Booter.1.0.hqx - This is the booter that appeared on the MkLinux DR1 CD. (May 9, 1996) MkLinux_Booter.1.0.1.hqx - This is the booter that appeared on the MkLinux DR2 CD. (Aug 26, 1996) MkLinux_Booter.1.0.1.macdef.hqx - This is a resedit'ed version of the 1.0.1 Booter so that it boots into MacOS by default. MkLinux_Booter.1.2.9.hqx - This booter appeared in DR2.1update5. (Oct 21, 1997) It will not work with any kernel before DR2.1update5. MkLinux_Booter.1.2.9.gest12hack.hqx - A modified version of the 1.2.9 booter that allows Power Computer 120's to boot DR2.1update5. MkLinux_Booter.1.2.9a.hqx - A rebuild of the 1.2.9 booter (Oct 31,1997) MkLinux_Booter.1.3.hqx - Should now boot PowerBook 1400 and Power Computing 120 (Mar 12, 1998) MkLinux_Booter.1.4.hqx - Works better with HFS+ volumes (Mar 20, 1998) Information on MkLinux Booter 1.4: ---------------------------------- If you boot from an HFS volume, but have HFS+ volumes on other partitions, having the booter present in your extensions folder would prevent them from showing up on the desktop when booting into MacOS. Also, most users couldn't boot into MkLinux at all with this scenario. This booter should fix those problems. Information on MkLinux Booter 1.3: ---------------------------------- Added the ability to boot a PowerBook 1400 and Power Computing 120. None of the other current problems in the 1.2.9a booter are going to be fixed with this one. There are still problems with mixed HFS/HFS+ systems. Information on MkLinux Booter 1.2.9a: ------------------------------------- The 1.2.9 booter released in DR2.1update5 was built with improper structure alignment. The result of this is that when the booter has a "regular" error message to print, instead of putting up a box with a message in it, it gets a type 11 or some other MacOS crash. Since one of the most common problems is to forget to remove the "_" from "Mach_Kernel" when putting it in the Extensions folder, instead of the "can't find mach kernel" message, some people get a MacOS crash. If when you try to boot MkLinux, you're getting some sort of MacOS crash, then Booter 1.2.9a is for you. Instead of a crash, you will probably get a more descriptive message of what went wrong. Other than this symptom of not being able to print the error messages, there's nothing different from Booter 1.2.9 to Booter 1.2.9a. Information on MkLinux Booter 1.2.9: ------------------------------------ October 21, 1997 This booter is required for DR2.1update5. This booter can boot with VM on. It also passes the open firmware device tree into the microkernel. Information on MkLinux Booter 1.2.5: ------------------------------------ July 8, 1997 This attempts to fix the problem that some 6100's give a bus error if they've got a clock accelerator installed. If you have a 6100, and you are running it faster than its original speed, this booter will probably help you. Information on MkLinux Booter 1.2.4: ------------------------------------ July 7, 1997 Well, it seems that 1.2.3 didn't solve as many problems as it should have. Also, there was a new problem with the splash screen showing up in the lower right corner of the screen. This was a problem with the resources. The only difference between 1.2.4 and 1.2.3 is this fixup in the resources. It is unlikely that if 1.2.3 didn't work for you that 1.2.4 will work any better. However, if 1.2.3 worked for you but annoyed you because it was not centered on your screen, then 1.2.4 is for you! Information on MkLinux Booter 1.2.3: ------------------------------------ July 2, 1997 This is version 1.2.3 of the MkLinux Booter. It is in this directory as a binhexed file: MkLinux_Booter.1.2.3.hqx Use your favorite mechanism to ftp this file and de-binhex it. Then place it in your extensions folder with the name "MkLinux Booter" (make sure there's a space in the name). Be sure to save your old booter, in case there are problems. This is a work-in-progress booter. Please be aware that "your mileage may vary." Some changes since 1.1.1: A fairly serious bug was found and fixed that could cause crashes depending on the size of the kernel, extensions loaded, disk cache settings, etc. Can default boot into MacOS, if told to do so by the MkLinux Control Panel. Doesn't show the "Splash Screen" if the timeout is set to 0 seconds. New ELF file interpretation for better handling of the kernels created with the newer shared-library-base toolset (Recently distributed in DR2.1update3). Turns off the cursor before going to Mach, especially useful for those who have video cards with hardware cursors that were hanging around forever during the MkLinux session.
